Reviewed: Nest eco cleaning stuff

Majestic. That's the only fit word for the design and presentation of Nest's new eco cleaning range (mentioned previously here). Where Ecover is proudly practical and spartan, Nest's products resemble posh toiletries - see for yourself in the pic on the left. Now, because a person should only read so many words on cleaning products in their lifetime, this review's short. I've tested the laundry water and antibacterial surface cleaner.

The water leaves your sheets and togs with a faint yet distinct lavender smell, which I like but you may not if floral ain't your thing. The surface cleaner, meanwhile, is clearly better than Ecover at cutting through encrusted-omlette-on-the-hob and other kitchen spills. It does, however, smell fairly strongly of vinegar - hence the formidable cleaning power - which may not be to everyone's taste. Nest says its stuff is made from '100 per cent fresh fruits, plants, malt solutions, minerals and essential oils' and, having used their products, I've no reason to doubt it: there's certainly nothing synthetic-smelling about them. One other nice touch is that Nest flogs everything in bottles, selling a trigger spray seperately for 50p to cut down on waste and price.

The price, of course, is where the catch lies. The cleaner's £3.90 for 500ml - Ecover's alternative costs £1.85 - while the 500ml laundry water's £3.45 to Ecover's £1.85 for the same amount of fabric softener. So the range costs twice the price of Ecover stuff. I'm still a fan, though, if only because the beautiful nature of the products has inspired my girlfriend to previously unheard-of heights of cleaning.

I have never used their cleaning products before. I'm going to have to give them a try. At least the botles look slick.
