Glad, ahem, tidings, surfers: the Eden Project's long-awaited eco-friendly board has finally gone on sale (earlier story here). Although boarding's the closest I've come to surfing and most of my surf knowledge comes from watching Riding Giants, it doesn't take much research to discover most boards are more black than green. Here's where the Eco Board differs...
It's essentially a return to surfing's roots - back in 1950s' Hawaii, most boards were made from wood. Today the vast majority are a nasty mix of petrochemicals and fibreglass, both of which end up in landfill if you snap the thing executing a gnarly manoeuvre. Instead, the Eco Board employs ultra light balsa wood, hemp and plant resin - meaning less chemicals in the manufacture and a board that'll happily compost if you break it. Provided you own one mother of a compost bin.
For now, the price ain't cheap at £975, but by buying one you're also be helping the UK's board makers - check Homeblown for sales and more info. Later this year the price should come down a bit when mass manufacturing kicks in.
I've written about the Eco Board in May's issue of Stuff Magazine - it's on sale 3rd April - alongside several other green gadgets.
Wazzup!
