I hold my hands up: I was amongst the thousands of daughters and sons buying blooms from garage forecourts and supermarkets this morning. What I should have done, of course, is buy a Fairtrade bunch (there's a list here) or ordered some of Wiggly Wiggler's awesome if pricey seasonal picks (pictured).
As The Indy points out, most flowers from this time of year are flown all the way from Kenya and are harvested by chaps and ladies working in conditions worse than the Somerfield where I stacked shelves at 16. Yes, worse than that. Besides, as if the air miles and human rights stuff wasn't enough to persuade you, seasonal ones will last much longer: they should be far fresher.
The wonderfully quaint-sounding Flowers & Plants assocation has a month-by-month list of which flowers are in season on its site. There's a whole other choice here - organic flowers - which I'll pick up on soon.
